Plot Summary: "When a film starts with a dialogue like ""Badi badi fights mein aisi choti choti maar-peet hoti rahtein hain"", you know exactly what is in store for you. Farah Khan’s Happy New Year is a typical Bollywood bandwagon of chiseled heroes, a bootylicious heroine, a bunch of adorable idiots and whole lot of glossy chaos.Did we miss something here? Yes, there is a story too, unlike Farah Khan’s previous production Tees Maar Khan. Happy New Year traces the story of six underdogs – Charlie, Nandu, Jag, Mohini, Tammy and Rohan – and their plans to pull out the biggest diamond heist ever. Most of the film is centered around a dance competition in Dubai, where the super six are disguised as a dance troupe. Their USP ? They are the world’s worst dancers ever.
The rest of the film follows how Charlie and his gang carry out the heist amidst their misadventures. As Charlie aka Chandramohan, Shah Rukh Khan does what he does best. If you are an avid fan of the King Khan, you will not be disappointed. The first few minutes of the film feel like a video portfolio of the actor. You will be bombarded with close-ups, long shots, mid-shots and extreme close-up shots of Shah Rukh’s six-pack. Ladies, you can scream now. Oh yes, he also reprises his signature move. Deepika Padukone steals the show as Mohini. Sonu Sood gives a good performance as the robust Jag. Even though some of the puns are utterly ridiculous, Boman Irani and Abhishek Bachchan provide the necessary comic relief. Jaggu dada (Jackie Shroff) as Charan Grover also does an impressive job.
Perhaps, more onscreen space for him in the future would be a good idea. Also, don’t be surprised to see Bollywood’s elite stars in cameos in the film. There are extravagant sets, Vishal-Shekar‘s killer soundtrack and of course, Shah Rukh Khan. But, if you are looking for logic in Farah Khan‘s banal style of filmmaking, Happy New Year isn’t much of a good idea. It’s time Farah Khan tries something new, other than just going bonkers over the tried-and-tested Bollywood formula. Why should you watch the film? If you are a die-hard fan of Shah Rukh Khan, don’t miss Happy New Year. He will make you swoon with his charm and the superstar attitude. Everyone else can watch Happy New Year for its twisted dialogues, Boman and Abhishek‘s comic timing and of course, the mesmerizing Mohini. Let the festive season kick in with a bang, with Charlie and his gang."
